The main goal of modern dentistry is to preserve a complete natural set of teeth for a lifetime, or to preserve the teeth for a lifetime, of to preserve the teeth as a functional and aesthetic unit as much as possible. When various pathological processes (caries, trauma, abrasion...)lead to pulp disease and threaten the survival of the tooth, the dentist uses all his professional resources to preserve the vitality of the tooth or, if this is not possible, to prevent periapical disease.
If periapical disease is already present, dental treatment is performed to allow healing. The part of dentistry that deals with preserving tooth vitality and treating inflamed or necrotic pulp and its consequences for the adjacent tissues is named sndodontics.
